The Horrors - Strange House

A bold statement such as this can explain so much :-

PSYCHOTIC SOUNDS FOR FREAKS AND WEIRDOS

The Horrors debut album has definitely a certain sinister, dark, evil, foreboding feeling about it. The sounds captured on the record drip with a creepy umpa lumpa vibe. A strange shiver flows down your spine and the hairs on your neck stand up, as if sensing that there is another entity or presence is in the room with you. The presence suddenly taking form, listening with  a malicious smile spreading across the dark lord's face. He who must not be named!

Amongst the scenes of death, blood, evil and destruction there are many cool tunes to be found here. Gloves and Count In Five are two prime examples. Each track, inclusive, have the eerie haunts of an organ being played devilishly by an hyperactive Hunch Back of olde londinium.  The evil ( I wonder how many times this word will appear in this review) aura of the band grows in strength and builds and builds. It takes a dark turn in such tracks as Jack The Ripper and Death In The Chapel. Slow, disturbingly dire touches of madness flow through these songs. You feel as if a cold boney hand touches you on the shoulder, two piercingly bright red eyes burn in a shallow empty lifeless skull!

Each track on the album goes a long way to understanding the inner most thoughts of the band. And from the evidence on show here, looking into their souls you most wonder about the sanity and or rationality of the individuals. A potential bleak out look is evitable, yet whilst watching extended highlights of this year's NME awards tour, an interview was conducted with the band and a number of the band members if not all came across as sanely driven, bright and pretty much down to earth people. So how did they come up with the ghoulish ideas that is on display on the album? Whatever was the driving force behind this obviously worked out rather well.

This album and the band are definitely one of the most intriguing and most noticeable artists/work to appear on the modern day music scene for a long time. It it easy to see why they have created a stir in the music industry and the mass of fans they won over is self evident that the band are force to be reckoned with. Bad is the new good!
